Willa Stein, Raleigh, NC Member Since November 2006 Artist Statement Willa Stein has been involved in the photographic arts for over 36 years, starting out with a borrowed 35mm camera, a roll of film and a high school shop darkroom. Early on Willa primarily worked with black and white film and fell in love with the art of hand tinting using oil paints. Willa learned the technique of hand tinting photographs while attending The Pennsylvania’s Governor’s School for the Arts on a scholarship at Bucknell University in 1980. From there she got a degree in photography from the Art Institute of Colorado. She worked in numerous studios printing for other photographers but before long set out on her own. Today Willa’s digital imagery is full of all kinds of twist and turns, her work has been described as whimsical and imaginary with a documentary style. She is known for her fine-art editorial work, shooting anything from baby portraits to musical acts and auto racing.
