Description CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD by Lynn Bauer is a male Calliope hummingbird taken during the spring migration season in Southern California. This beautiful boy is in 'full bloom' ...wings extended and with his pretty gorget colored up by the morning sun. Pretty flowers on the far side of the garden create beautiful bokeh behind him. The Calliope hummingbird is the smallest bird in North America, north of Mexico. All hummingbirds in our area are small...but, when I saw this little guy sitting at the feeder, he was about half the size of all the others! He truly is a tiny bird! This is only the second Calliope I have ever seen, and I am on the lookout for them...so, they are fairly rare.
