Artist Statement Orlando Ferrer Lara was born in the Philippines to Orlando Realin Lara and Helen Ferrer Lara. As a boy Orlando was always interested in comic books (X-Men, Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), manga/anime (Lone Wolf & Cub, Astro Boy, Robotech, etc.), and classic Warner Brothers Cartoons (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Pepe Le Pew, etc).
His parents had no idea what was in store when Orlando first started drawing and writing all over the walls and pages of his mom’s cookbooks and magazines. Little did anyone know that even after being reprimanded for expressing himself at an early age, would these habits carry over to serve him later on in life.
After seeing the cholo/gang tagging around the neighborhood and watching Beat Street and Breaking, Orlando found more inspiration and an outlet in graffiti. Instead of paying attention in his classes, he would get caught in the middle of lectures doodling and practicing his graffiti by his teachers. From an early age Orlando knew he needed to pursue his love of art regardless of what anyone else thought.
Almost schizophrenic in his approach to personal expression and artwork; Orlando draws from his love of anything visually stimulating. The graffiti and tattoo influence can be seen along with cartoons and comic books mixed in with past masters. Themes he has been working with recently involve these influences and elements along with his love and ideas about nature and spirituality.
Currently employed in Las Vegas, Nevada as a designer/animator for the slot machine/gaming industry, Orlando gets to work on his chops digitally in the daily grind of corporate America. Ideally, Orlando would like to work full time on his personal work and would appreciate any help in attaining his goal of artistic autonomy.
