Artist Statement I was born and raised in Utah's wild red desert, and have found that no matter how far abroad I travel, the same breathless urgency to connect people to place pursues me. My father is an environmentalist and furniture designer and my mother is a botanist, healer and weaver. Art and earth were integral parts of my upbringing. When other kids were asleep or watching cartoons, I was up early painting, drawing, and listening to the sounds of the valley at dawn. By the time I was five, I was learning to paint by studying and copying the great masters.
After I had exhausted all that the small uranium town's public high school had to offer, I left for the Idyllwild Arts Academy and eventually the Rhode Island School of Design. I spent my junior year abroad as part of R.I.S.D.'s European Honors Program in Rome. There, in one of the world's oldest and most richly inhabited cities, I discovered civilization as deeply layered and eroded as the sedimentary landscape of my childhood. It was also in Italy that I began to paint portraits with a sense of the divine or something magical in them. I became gripped by a desire to express life's greater mysteries on canvas, a passion that only grows with the passing years. My work has become a continual search for the best way to express my wonder about our beautiful world.
