Artist Statement I'll never forget the day years ago, that I decided to experiment with the effect that 'reflection' can have in a photograph. I'd been leaning on my car, waiting for a friend of mine when I suddenly noticed the reflection of various things I could see in the roof of my car. The day was very warm; smokin', as we liked to describe hot temperatures in those days. The sun was high up overhead in the sky, and extremely bright. My door was open with my right foot up on the floor sill of the car; my upper body resting against the roof ledge, with both arms folded in front of me and my chin resting on my forearms. So, here I am musing to myself, watching the shimmering heat waves streaming up out of all that hot metal, seeming to alter the nature of reality itself, while experiencing the warm glow of the day’s temperatures flowing throughout my soul. While posing in this position, I noticed that I could see a reflection of the sun in the roof. Not just as a glare against the metal, but, the actual object itself. I could see the sky, clouds, trees, houses and vehicles; anything that was high and wide enough to be reflected in the metal with respect to my own height, and at an angle which allowed me to see what I saw reflected in the roof. Simply amazing, I thought. I wondered to myself what the result would look like if I placed an object on the roof of my car, and then, take a picture of that object and its reflection. Well, I didn't wait long to test my curiosity, as I happened to have a disposable Kodak camera in the car. I found several items to shoot and, shoot I did. I was blown away by the result. Needless to say, that day was the beginning of my curiosity with imaging, and imagination; especially with what I describe as "reflective imaging". Photography is certainly reflective of the multi-faceted nature of humans and humanity. While we have an observable, visual component, we also have an invisible component, expressed through visually observable means. It can be said that, our 'real' beauty is not, in fact or in actuality, what we can observe visually, but, by what is EXPRESSED, invisibly. Lying (or standing) naked and unmoving, of itself, says very little. But, adorn the slightest thread, make the slightest gesture, display the slightest expression, cut the slightest eye (even while lying naked and unmoving!), and you've spoken, or at least started to speak, volumes about who you might be. And so, everyone here has a story, and is expressing something about themselves in a ‘reflective’ way. I'm also here to reflect something; about me... enjoy
