Artist Statement I was born and raised in a small town about seven miles from Manchester in the North-West of England. My love of photography was generated by my parents buying me my first camera in the early 1970's. After leaving school in 1982, I started work at a retail photographic store, close to home, basically selling all aspects of camera and darkroom equipment. I can still remember the first SLR I ever sold as though it was yesterday! Two years later my boss retired and the business was bought by another photo store, who as well as selling equipment also carried out in-house processing and printing. For the first three years we took in customers films and transferred them to the other branch, then came the time for us to process on-site. I expressed an interest to learn how it "all" worked and as they say.."the next 19 years was history".
Nowadays with the meteoric rise of digital photography my experiences with film and film cameras seems a little "antique", but nevertheless it has stood me in good stead as the knowledge I gained of how yesterday's cameras used to work, helps me today. As they say..."some thing's never change", a great photo is still a great photo ..no matter what camera was employed.
In December of 2006 I resigned from my job, as I had recently met my American wife. For the next 18 months, we travelled back and forth to the USA and I used this time to build up my portfolio. We visited, briefly, several cities in Europe as my wife had not travelled outside the USA before. It was great to, finally, be behind my own camera and this "Green Card" period, as we call it, re-ignited my love for creating photographs. After all, taking a photo is similar to telling a story.
