Artist Statement I studied illustration at the University of Buffalo, and moved to New York City to pursue my dream of working for newspapers and magazines... and I've been rather successful! It seems I'm often called upon to produce whimsical illustrations for dry news stories. So many of the drawings turn out 'cute', (animals dressed as people, etc.) that I decided to sell a few here; since I frequently get requests for reprints.
I work in scratchboard, which is a reverse process: the board starts out all black, and then one scratches away the ink to reveal the chalky surface underneath. The colors are added later, with dyes. Overall, the effect I'm seeking to produce is that of a hand-tinted engraving or print. But of course, they are their own thing!
I moved to scenic Boulder, Colorado a year after 911, and I'm loving the outdoorsy lifestyle. In my non-drawing time, I play the cello, take long bicycle rides, drink coffee with friends, and wash my dog.
