Kona Howlett, Geelong Member Since July 2010 Artist Statement I don't set out to produce art about one subject or another. I find my inspiration in all things around us, whether it be a bee sitting on a flower, a snail going about its life or even the waves along a shore line all these things are beautiful to me. My work tends to focus on nature not because I am an environmentalist but because these are the things I find beautiful and if we go about our lives the way we are then a lot of these things will not be around for future generations to enjoy.
I was brought up in the country and with a love of exploring the bush I have found many things to bring delight to me such as fungi and little rocks that have craters and little life forms living in them, for me it was an escape from everyday life a chance to watch the coming and goings of all things wild. Every summer my family would go to Warrnambool and it is there that my love of the ocean really took over, I have enjoyed many summers along the Great Ocean Road and seeing just how much it has changed over the years and hoping that I may be able to capture the real beauty in the colours of the limestone formations at all times and seasons.
Although I have no formal training in photography I feel that if you can feel and see the beauty then it will come through you and into the photographs. People often ask why have I photographed a certain piece of work and my statement is...if you've taken a photograph and that's how you wanted it to be - hopefully it can speak for itself and whatever it says to the viewer - it's the right message because there isn't a wrong or a right message. Each person takes something a little different from the same picture and I am happy with that.
And as I always say “there is nothing more beautiful than art”
