Artist Statement I have been photographing the natural and man made world for nearly 70 years to help preserve and pass on the beauty and grace of our world. I view the image as exposed in the camera as a first draft. Film or a CCD sees colors, brightness and form very differently than the human eye and brain. I use the darkroom (and now the digital darkroom without harmful chemicals -- aka Photoshop) to recapture the sense and emotion I felt at the scene. In that sense, these are straight images with minimum manipulation.

While mostly self taught from the writings and photographs of Ansel Adams, Edward and Brett Weston, Elliott Porter and many others -- and paintings from the 13th century byzintine masters to the modern abstract artists, I have attended various master classes and seminars.

My first camera was a box brownie. Then a Mercury 35mm and through a variety of film pack and view cameras, Leicas, Canons, and now a Nikon digital SLR. The equipment matters much less to me than the eye and heart.
