Description A scene outside a flea market kiosk: middke-eastern drums ('darbouka') are strung from an overhang and sit upside-down on the ground; floor mats are rolled in a brass bin; brooms stand at attention like identical toy soldiers; textiles hang on the wall. Orderliness within confusion. Old flea market in Jaffa, Israel, and a favorite of the photographer.
Jean Roth, USA Member Since September 2006 Artist Statement I am a graphic designer, editor and specialist in creative communications solutions, as well as an intercultural specialist.
I have a Masters from UCLA in Japanese Language and Literature. I spent part of my college in Japan, and I worked and lived eight years in Israel (I have dual citizenship), so I have an oddly cross-cultural view of the world.
I see myself more as an observer and graphic journalist, rather than an "art photographer." When I have a camera in my hand I find I am fascinated by texture, architecture (doors, roofs, stairs, balconies, arches, alleyways), cross-cultural juxtapositions and "things in bunches." Since language attracts me, I also often find myself snapping odd signage.
