Description 'Deadly Beauty' is a series of paintings created in 2010. The main theme is exactly what the title describes: beauty that can become deadly (usually to others). This was a year of fruitful experimentation in media, therefore the term 'mixed media' is fully justified here.
KATERINA STAMATELOS, New York City Member Since October 2016 Artist Statement I consider myself as a self-taught artist. I create art in large as well as in small formats. After years of experiments, I decided that my preferred medium is gouache on paper! Very little is known about the unique properties of gouache: believe me, it's an exciting medium! My fascination with it started as I used to marvel over Medieval manuscript paintings! I now use a "mixed media" that consists of gouache and ink. Ink gives me the opportunity to create amazing details; gouache gives me the brilliance in colors and the fluidity of using it in several ways.
My influences are: German expressionism and the Greek Orthodox ikons. I owe the persistent use of gold to the latter one. My preferred "theme" is portrait: not of famous people, but the portraying of transformative force on an everyday face. You will find more detailed info as you visit ...
