Artist Statement I find art to be a very powerful thing. It has the ability to evoke strong emotions through the use of color, texture, and medium. It has the ability to shape peoples' perceptions of the world around them by the use of subject matter. Art is used to create harmony and enhance the world around it bringing a personal touch to the lives of those who view it. Because of this phenomenon there is a strong connection between the people who create the artworks and those who view it.
A wise man once said to me if you want to understand the culture of a people, you don't study their wars and politics, you study their art and music. It is there that the important issues of daily life are displayed. I believe this to be true because I, as an artist, also try to express my philosophies and perceptions through various art mediums.
Because I obtain much of my inspiration from nature, I find an amazing assortment of endless possibilities for creative expression. I've reproduced the texture of an animal's fur in a drawing and the color of a beetle's wing covers in a painting. The possibilities are limitless.
In my current medium, ceramics, I am recreating the texture of conglomerate stones on many of my vessels. I’m fascinated by the tactile and visual texture that occurs naturally in this type of stone and I’m enjoying the application of it to my unnatural formations in clay. It is amazing to me how something so simple can be so thrilling. There is great beauty in the world in which we live and it is my joy and pleasure to capture the idea of it in my own works of art.
