Description Watercolor, 15 x 11. The Temple Mount is an elevated plateau in the Old City of Jerusalem rich with history and religious importance, is sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians. Originally, it was the site of the great Temple of Jerusalem, the holiest place in Judaism. For Muslims, it is the site of the Prophet Muhammad's journey to heaven. Finally, Christians revere it as a place frequently visited by Jesus and some believe it will play a major role in end-time events. The Dome of the Rock is located at the center of the Temple Mount. It is the oldest extant Islamic monument. The rock over which the shrine was built is sacred to both Muslims and Jews. The Prophet Muhammad, founder of Islam, is traditionally believed to have ascended into heaven from the site. In Jewish tradition it is here that Abraham, the progenitor and first patriarch of the Hebrew people, is said to have prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac. The Dome is in the octagonal shape of a Byzantine martyrium.
