Artist Statement My name is Melenie Ottosen and I live in Phoenix, Arizona. I began taking pictures when I was in college using a Canon 35mm point-and-shoot, but as a college student I couldn’t afford the cost of processing film, and my hobby went on the back burner for several years. In the summer of 2002 I got my first digital camera, a Nikon 4-megapixel point-and-shoot. Gradually, my old hobby turned into a full-fledged passion! I have been seriously pursuing photography since September of 2005. I am self-taught, learning all I know about photography from tons of reading and practice, practice, practice!

I find I am happiest when I am out in nature, taking photographs of landscapes or wildlife, as well as some of my favorite places. I have a great love for the world we live in and the creatures that inhabit it. For me, a successful photograph is one that inspires people to appreciate the beauty of the world around us.

I currently shoot both digital and film, using a Nikon D50 6-megapixel digital SLR and a Nikon N80 35mm SLR with a variety of lenses. I do not digitally enhance or alter my photos, aside from the occasional removal of specks of dirt and dust. In other words, I try to preserve in my images the light, color and beauty exactly as I remember them.

Please note: I have chosen, as default, what I consider the best size for each of my images. I then choose the mats and frame that I feel best complement the image. But any of these factors may be changed to fit individual needs and tastes.
