Artist Statement Anyone that has every tried to shoot wildlife, especially birds that are flying knows how hard it is. I wanted to try and shoot flying birds and knew that the small fast ones were almost impossible to photograph, so I set out to find the larger birds like the heron and egret. Shooting outdoors can be difficult especially with the exposure compensation that is needed, so I had to adjust the camera to +2 stops to get a better exposure on the subject. The exposure was still a little off, but without a flash it is almost impossible to get an accurate exposure. I did manage to fix a lot of the exposure issues in both Lightroom and Photoshop.
I used Photoshop to add different textures and painted looks to three of the best images in the series. The techniques are pretty much the same, but the outcome is very different. I used textures that were vibrant and almost exciting in color. The images fill the gap of adding a more varied species of birds for this portfolio. As this portfolio progresses I don’t want to duplicate any one species if at all possible, so I am shooting at different locations every week to get a more varied collection of birds. I think I achieved the goal of producing an attention-grabbing image in all three images because of the vibrant color and unique textures used.
