Artist Statement Paul Mirocha's  art first appeared in Gathering the Desert by Gary Paul Nabhan, winner of the John Burroughs Medal for natural history in 1985. After 13 years as a full-time graphic designer, Paul left to become a self-employed illustrator so he could devote himself to working on Moon of the Wild Pigs by Jean Craighead George. Since then, he has produced over 20 children’s picture books and pop-ups as well as  illustrations for modern nature writing, among them High Tide in Tucson and Small Wonder, by Barbara Kingsolver. His work is included in the book The Very Best of Children’s Illustration, compiled by the Society of Illustrators. 

Paul's recent picture book, The Bee Tree, is the result of six trips to Malaysia over a ten year period to learn about the nature and culture in a tropical rainforest country. 

Paul is known as the illustrator to call for both accuracy and emotional appeal, also weird and unusual plants and animals. Among thoe recent titles is Hungry Plants (plants that eat meat), Platypus!, and Amazing Armadillos.
