Artist Statement There are 2 sides of me. Rena and Rene. I admit I’m a bully. I demand attention and make bold statements infused with emotion based on my view of the world and its values. I found a way to get my point across that’s far less hostile and combative than arguing. I am an artist. After all, people expect artists to be egocentric and outspoken. They look for hidden meaning within images. With photomontage as my palette, I can address controversial topics that could not be so much as whispered in polite society, with the stroke of a digital pen.
As an artist I am free to create my version of reality and present it with style and grace.
The main elements of my artistic style are:
1. Visually Compelling. It must grab your attention with bold contrasting colors that draw you in and persuade you to take a closer look.
2. Multiple Images. It is a complex composition of photographs and language blended to create a montage effect. The purpose is to make you ask, “What does it mean or what were you thinking.”
3. Effective. It must be visually haunting and elicit an emotional response.
Art is the foreground of my persona, the one I allow the world to see. Revealing my innermost thoughts to the world in visual form is an emotional challenge. At stake is the mind and heart of my audience, the ones who get the subtle meaning. What moves an audience is what they get; anger at social injustice, compassion at suffering, exultation at conquest, and a rage for inclusion. That is exactly what I offer, visually compelling images that stimulate an emotional response. I intend to make you see it my way.
