Description Painting depicting a young Panzergrenadier of the 1st Battalion, 26th SS Panzergrenadier Regiment in Normandy. The infantry companies of the regiment were almost entirely filled with 18-year old volunteers from the Hitler Youth born in 1926. The regiment was involved in vicious fighting with the British and Canadians between the 8-9th of June near the village of Norrey-en-Bessin, which resulted in very heavy losses on both sides. Thus, the initial idealism and confidence that they would drive the Allies back into the sea was replaced with the grave realisation that they faced overwhelming odds. In the space of 3 months, the once proud regiment, thousands strong, was reduced to just a few hundred survivors.Size: 24 x 18 in. (660 x 457 mm)Medium: oil on board
