Artist Statement I feel that I am represented by various mediums, artistic styles, and content. I work primarily with thematic art, specifically dealing with music, incorporation of text, the beauty of woman, social awareness, politics, and very recently urban landscape. I work towards creating a space of contrast where the figures, shapes, and colors have a presence or personality of their own. If I had to choose one word to describe my artwork, that word would be rich; that being made from or consisting of things of the highest quality. Rich in color, rich in movement, rich in message, rich in emotion, and rich in thought, rich in purpose.
.

A great deal of my work has a great deal to do with my strong background in music. Music was my first love, not pursued due to lack of discipline, personal strength, and courage. In being a visual artist I’ve found discipline. The discipline of learning and following technique, of critiquing and being critiqued, of being able to discuss and defend my artwork confidently and comfortably. Through art I’ve grown into a positive, strong-willed, goal-oriented, more self-believing individual.
.

My list of influences for my artwork is never-ending. I appreciate the complexity of the work by African American artists such as Kadir Nelson, who’s figures are elongated and stylized beautifully, Aaron and Allen Hicks, who uses mediums in such a way that they could pass for another medium (Paintings that look like soft pastel drawings). Local artists in Chicago who have taken me under their wing often assist me with issues of content. My biggest influence is life, my surroundings, thing’s I love, things I don’t understand, things I want to make sense of, things I think about, music I hear, everything has a creative influence on me.
