Artist Statement My work is as much about exploring my surroundings as it is about shooting for arts sake. My photographs come from wrong turns on the way to the grocery store and from unplanned stops on country highways while my family waits (im)patiently in the car. It is the overlooked knicknack in a store window, the peeling murals on walls somebody once cared about. It is a city beach teeming with bodies and a rural farm an hour away, crowded with cows. My art is in neon hotel signs, dusty dirt roads, treasures behind smudged store windows.

I began shooting in the early 70s and worked exclusively with B&W film, creating photographs of settings and subjects whose vibrancy lent balance to the muted shades of gray. A 12-year background in framing and art conservation taught me to see my work more wholly, as a presentation. I started shooting for a living over 20 years ago, and as photography evolved, so did I. As I picked up digital photography, I began experimenting with color, and began to see it as just as integral to the piece as my subject. Rather than shooting on a larger scale as I have in the past, I now concentrate on the parts that make up the whole; the details that can stand alone and say just as much.
