Description The message of Flowerboy:Although aesthetically pleasing, Flowerboy is a symbolic piece. At first glance, what the eye is presented with here is the backside of a perfect body. The flower on the subject's back represents the idea of ink on skin which in turn suggests a tattoo which is in reality, something foreign, painfully introduced underneath the skin with a sharp needle. Framing a tattoo in such a manner certainly doesnt sound beautiful, but it is. We know tattoos to be equal parts beauty and pain. Not seeing meaningful gay art in the marketplace, I have struck out to begin a dialogue with my work. This piece points to me, a gay man who has been battling HIV since 1988. I believe Ive survived in order to be a positive voice that speaks to all the effort my community has put forth to keep me alive.FLowerboy represents a personal achievement for me because it explores beauty, not despite the pain, but because of the pain. Flowerboy asks, What has gotten under your skin and how have you used your pain to make something beautiful in your life?
Greg Griggs, Portland Member Since May 2011 Artist Statement I'm an artist living in Portland Oregon. My photography is featured in a blog called publiclytransported.com., an on line publication I also write for.
I began creating my own art because I didn't see anything that spoke to me personally. I am luck because I get to do what I love. I hope that comes through in my work and I hope you find something here that speaks to you. Thanks for visiting.
