Adrien Bisson, Westford, Massachusetts Member Since February 2008 Artist Statement I was born and grew up in Exeter, New Hampshire. As a high school student, I became interested in photography. It had been a hobby of my father's as well, and when I discovered his darkroom equipment in storage, he allowed me to set it up in our basement. He had always wanted to own a Speed Graphic 4x5 camera, but had settled for a Graflex twin lens reflex which he let me experiment with. Eventually, using money that I earned mowing lawns, I was able to buy my own used Pentax Spotmatic 35mm SLR. I eventually began taking freelance shots for the local newspapers. My parents had given me the series of Photography books published at that time by Time/Life. I spent hours admiring and wishing that I could emulate the work of Arnold Newman, Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Edward Weston, and many others.
At the same time I was learning to play the trumpet and became consumed by my interest in Jazz. I ended up going to Berklee College of Music, where I earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet performance. After a short road career with the Guy Lombardo "ghost band", I worked in the Boston area performing, arranging and teaching trumpet. After becoming disillusioned with life as a musician, I studied computer science. In the years that followed, I worked for companies such as IBM, Digital Equipment, Rational and several other smaller startups. But photography, which had taken a back seat to several other things, was always there.
In those early years I was primarily a black and white shooter. More recently I have become intensely interested in color and the range of expression that it affords. My photographic interests today are nature and landscape, natural still life, macro work and abstracts. I also enjoy working with people and on other more commercial endeavors.
