Artist Statement I am Wess, I am 28, and a photographer in "The Gem City" (Quincy, IL). My favorite subjects are urban and rural decay (in many, many permutations) and how this decay can be rendered almost "super real" or "surreal" (both morally and literally, shadow and light in noir are very symbolic) through noir lighting techniques and photography tricks.

I use these noiresque techniques in my work because they add that stark super real view but also because they add a certain degree of darkness, forboding, and even energy, like being in a 1920's jazz club: not too mention the pure "cool" factor too. Who wouldn't say the Sam Spade or even Tarantino "Reservoir Dogs" (not pure "noir" but certainly "noiresque") look doesn't still define "cool" at some level?

http://www.facebook.com/gemcitynoir has a more complete body of my work: I am working on uploading those images here. In the mean time, if there's a piece on the facebook site you would like to see here, please let me know and I will upload it, my email:
