Artist Statement Artist Statement
My work attempts to voice an understanding to the viewer of my personal sense of perception of the world around me. The work derives this voice as a means of conveying common traits and issues that I have faced either in my present life, or in the past.
The tone of my work tends to be muted. Stories that lie behind the pieces often relate a personal perception. Each piece holds its own life, from its creation and development to its finalization of completion; yet often in the process of construction of a work, I find that a piece takes on a new direction of its own. The choice to follow or not, this voice often is a struggle, particularly when my preconceived vision of the work does not guide the direction the work is going through. This decision to take another direction with a piece often moves the exploration of the work into its own realm, allowing creation to grow within itself, guided only by the vision of what comes as it is made. This creative process has a positive and negative aspect. The positive being that it feels new, fresh, particularly when the life and creation of the work takes on a new direction of its own. On the negative side, it is unseen whether the result will reflect the original concept.
Growth in my work is a guiding source to continue in the artistic process. Understanding of the process, which inspires creation, continues to intrigue and push me.
Deciding the best design approach and medium for the construction of a work is as much a challenge as the idea itself. With each design, limitation there is also its own freedom. When resolving this choice in each work, I address not only my own passage within the work relating to my life, but bridge the gap in addressing a relationship to the viewer.
