Artist Statement Nature is Art and Art is my Nature.
My obsession is creativity, I find it’s an endless pursuit of observing,
capturing, creating and sharing moments in our lives. I enjoy it when
an image occupies a persons thoughts for more than a few seconds
stimulating their imagination and inspiring creativity. This interaction
and exchange with people is why I continue to create artwork.
The visual image is the language of creation, transcending written
language barriers and providing a universal medium we can all
understand. It’s not limited to one persons meaning or concept and is
always open to interpretation. The natural world has its own language
which I am trying to acknowledge in my artwork.
“Art does not reproduce what we see; rather it makes us see”.
Paul Klee
This year, 2007 I returned to far North Queensland after being away
for over 15 years. I was born in Kuranda and Growing up in the
rainforest and diving on the reefs gave me an appreciation of the
natural world and the unlimited creativity it releases.
I have studied Traditional and Contemporary Photography, Art and
Design in San Francisco, Berlin, Adelaide and Melbourne, resulting in
degrees and certificates. However, cities don’t interest me right now
as I find myself retracing steps I took many years ago along the Barron
river and through the bush. Wait a while, leaches and mould bring
back memories of how it was and still is up here.
“Organic Photo Montage” is the term I use when trying to describe
my style of creating images.
I am in the process of creating a Tropical North Queensland series and
working on a project called “Obnoxious Beauty” which is a series of
images made entirely out of plants we concider weeds.
This series will be exhibited upon completion at the Tanks Art Centre,
Cairns, June 2008
