Artist Statement I bought my first camera when I was stationed in Augsburg, Germany through the Army. Photography was just something I knew I wanted to do, and Germany seemed like the perfect place to start. I bought a small Nikon 301 and a 50 mm lens from a store in town. It took some time to explain to the clerk that I needed an instruction book in English, but we finally sorted it out and they had one sent within a week.

I had also bought a bicycle around this time, and had done some exploring in the forest just outside of the "Kaserne" where I was stationed. I knew I wanted to make a photo of the light shining through the trees, and among my first rolls of black & white film, I took the photographs Blauwald, Pipes, and Gothic Window.

I like to keep active when I photograph, always walking and observing. When I find something interesting, I like to focus and shoot quickly but carefully. I also try to focus on one aspect of what I shoot, to project a thought or idea onto the film and express a story behind the shot.
