Artist Statement My interest in photographic images goes back to high school, when my buddies and I filmed endless home movies about vampyres, World War I, cavemen, the Battle of Britain, prison escapes, and even Mars!
While I studied Journalism at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, I learned about black-and-white photography: cameras and accessories, the joys and frustrations of darkrooms, composition, lighting, and as a budding photo-journalist - how every picture should tell a story.
Moving on to Cal State University, Fullerton, I returned to film, discovering color, animation, working with models, and how to give images a pictorial or graphic-design quality. I took, printed, and sold landscape and nature photos.
Around the turn of the Twenty-first Century, I decided that - altho I was successful in landscape and nature sales - the field was over-crowded with wonderful National Geographic photographers, and of course - who could top the great landscape master Ansel Adams?
So I wanted to do "photos that no one else is taking." But people take photos of nearly everything!
This was around Christmas, and I wandered into a calendar store, featuring landscapes, nature, dogs, bathing beauties, etc. There was always at least one Angel Calendar - but inevitably it consisted of reproductions of Medieval and Renaissance paintings.
What if I could re-create that look - but with real people as models? And so The Angel Project was born!
ENJOY! DC
