Description Location: Washington, Mason County, Kentucky. A few miles south of the Ohio River at Maysville, Old Washington is an historic pioneer village frozen in time. The town's narrow thoroughfare was cut hundreds of years ago when huge buffalo, headed for salt licks to the south, pounded across the hills, leaving in their wake a wide path, discovered and used by early settlers as a gateway to the west as early as 1751. The village was founded in 1785, and was the original county seat. Historic sites include Mefford's Station (c. 1787); the Paxton Inn (1819); the Marshall Key House (1807); and the 'Cane Brake' (1790), currently serving as a visitor's center.
