Jeff Katz, Novato Member Since April 2010 Artist Statement I began painting abstract seriously in the early ‘70’s. I had a wonderful mentor to whom I owe much of my success; I describe him on my website's “My Story.” My former father-in-law (he painted well into his eighties) knew how to teach the fundamental principle of abstract composition, and he did it in an unorthodox way. His trick with abstracts ("You have to destroy in order to create!") was to eliminate any obstruction to the eyes’ continuous movement. He did this by destroying/recreating any area of a painting that “doesn’t work”, meaning it grabs more attention than any other area.
