Artist Statement Hello! I’m Ariel. Welcome to my studio tour! Yes, this building is about 200 years old--watch out for those wood beams on the ceiling.

That painting on top of the wood-burning stove? (I seldom use the stove.) That’s “Brando in Les Trois freres.” No, I’m sorry, it’s not for sale.

Today I’m having a sale of digital prints based on my collages. I hope you’re looking for something romantic, different, a little sexy, a bit mysterious.

I’d like to tell you more about the stories behind the images. In all of them, I’ve tried to combine beautiful colors with surprising details to depict where we are today when it comes to the male/female romance.

What do I mean by that? These collage paintings are of modern lovers. As lovers, we’re a bit pieced together nowadays, don't you think? Like a collage!

In my artwork, I use painted papers, but also found scraps. Subtle watercolors, with maybe some letters ripped from a fashion ad. An inky fragment of an old letter, a drawing from a fairy tale book of yesteryear, with a woman’s eyes from last week’s glossy circular.

To me, this expresses all the fragments of ourselves that we bring to loving. We’re impassioned but also conflicted. We’re sexy but maybe somewhat torn and pieced together. Look deeply into the images and let them lead you to the secrets of your own romantic nature.

Now, let me tell you about these prints. You can buy them in the size of the originals (an intimate 6”x8”) or if you’re bold, in a larger 9x12” size. And while we’re talking, help yourself to some chocolates! (Use your imagination for this part--Imagekind is unfortunately chocolate-free, but in my studio I always have some.)

Now as to the paper for the prints, you have your choice, but trust me and choose the Somerset Velvet. The name kind of suggests a clandestine romance in the Lake Country of England, doesn’t it? But that’s not why I’ve chosen it--just the most gorgeous result for the price! This museum-quality paper is THE most widely used by artists for digital printmaking. Combined with Imagekind's archival inks, it produces prints of vivid color and detail! Of course, you can choose the slightly cheaper varieties of poster paper, but the Velvet print is much more, well, sensual. (These collages are done on paper, and they have a matte finish, so neither glossy paper nor canvas would be as true to the originals.)

Would you like the print matted and framed? I often neglect to do that with my own work--until I see how much more beautiful the art looks. I’ve selected my favorite frame and mat combination for each image--the gold really makes “Jezebel” more exotically sexy, don’t you think? Kind of Gustav Klimtish.

But if you want to play around with different combinations to fit your decor, please do! It’s a lot of fun! You can see the image in a big gold frame, then zip, try it in a thin black frame--takes the guesswork out of it. Much easier to envision than with those little corners they show you at the frame shop.

The Imagekind selection process might take a little experimentation--but that’s part of the adventure of buying art, don’t you think? Like the way I keep changing around the silk drapes in my studio--do you like the reddish purple?

Thank you for visiting my studio! Drop me an email if you like and share your thoughts about the art. Come back again, and see what I’ve added in new installments of my romantic visions.

You can also visit my website to see a much larger selection of my lovers' collages--if you see one you’d like as a print, just email me with your request!
