Artist Statement At the tender age of five, Mark picked up his grandfather’s roll-film camera and kicked off a lifelong project to photograph his environment. His native country, The Netherlands, was an excellent starting point for this quest. As a self-taught photographer, Mark worked on a free-lance basis for a number of Dutch newspapers and magazines. He assisted in teaching photography at university, and traveled across Europe to seek out local culture and find subjects and inspiration. In 1999, Mark moved to Singapore, which further catered to his appetite for travel photography. Mark developed important portfolios on China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, whilst contributing images to Dutch media. His arrival in New York City, in the fall of 2001, started a new chapter in his imagery: that of modern city-scapes and the position of man in a bustling metropolis. His imagery of The Big Apple is in stark contrast with his contemporary photos of America’s West and the Rocky Mountains, where Mark is attracted to the contrast of vast plains and well... the rocky mountains.

Now settled in Lakeville, CT, and married with two boys, Mark works as a consultant. To plagiarize a NYPD advertisement: “Being a photographer is like having front row tickets to the Greatest Show On Earth”.
