Artist Statement WILLIE GRACE

Willie was born in Hawaii and has been a Beach Boy in Waikiki for over 38 years. I was basically self-taught... and always loved art and visiting shows and galleries throughout Hawaii and the United States. I have been taking photos and videos for the past 20 years on surfing and the Hawaiian Islands. My interest in art started about 15 years ago with airbrushing surfboards. In January of 2005 I got tendonitis in my shoulder from surfing and teaching the sport in Waikiki. I had to stay home and rest for my arm. After the first week I got stir crazy and went to a art store to buy some watercolor paints, brushes and paper. Watercolor is like airbrushing in some ways to me. I have fun with it and create my own personal and spiritual view of the mystery. I have always been fascinated with nature and the way sceneries change from sunrise to sunsets and have taken many photographs. I like to capture a moment in time, places with "Mana" (Supernatual or Spritual) like Waikiki and Diamond Head to name a few in these beautiful Hawaiian Islands. My love for my culture and all it's beauty inspires me to do watercolors of the past and let them speak for themselves.

I am also fascinated with Akua (Gods) creation and the mystical aspects of the Kupuna (Ancestors) who guide and Native Hawaiians in a modern world. It is very challenging but worth every minute to keep trying your best.

My motto is to never give up your dreams. I truly believe sooner or later they will come true. You just have to keep on trying...
