Artist Statement Inspiration for my artwork comes from my love of animals. A love I have always had as far back as I can remember. And it’s my connection to them, my relationship with them and my understanding of them that has become the focus and drive to create the work. I usually work in oil pastel and occasionally with watercolors. Oil pastel is a challenging medium; dense, thick, with a waxy base which usually cannot be applied to a surface with a brush, unless thinned down. Without brushwork to rely on for application and texture, I have to use and often devise other methods to apply pigment and move it around. For the watercolor work I like to use the translucent Yupo brand paper for me it brings a soft looseness and brilliancy to my work.

I have attained both BFA and MFA art degrees. But went on to develope another career. In past couple of years I have found that I missed being creative. and could not stay away from the arts. so I started painting my own pet's portraits. That got me going and I starting painting wildlife as well.

I have always had a love for animals my entire life so it seemed to be the right decision to use them as subject matter. My choosen medium is oil pastel because I find it to be a very versitile and challenging medium. I can work in thin watery washes, blend, build up layers, and scraffito through layers to reveil colors beneath: all of which allows me to capture the look and personality of the animal I am painting.
