Description The Karlsplatz takes its official name from the Elector Karl Theodor, who had the square laid out in 1791. It is better known as Stachus, supposedly named after the popular innkeeper Eustachius Fderl. The name might however also originate from the expression 'Stachel' (prickle). This was the term given to the arrows of the marksmen who used to try their combating skills in front of the Karlstor during the Middle Ages. The Stachus, offering underground parking space, is located on the western Altstadtring and includes a S-Bahn station, making it the traffic nodal point of Munich and one of the busiest squares in Europe.
Steven Phraner, Byfield,MA,USA Member Since July 2006 Artist Statement I come from Seattle, which is probably why I take photographs. These days I live in Massachusetts, and like combining travel and photography. I began to use SLR cameras when living in Honolulu in the 70's, and now use DSLR. My wife and I work together on thousands of photos in our travel libraries, many of which have never seen the light of day. Semper Fi to all my fellow Marines, and if you visit the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl, toss in a flower for my late father (and his shipmates). He joined his shipmates December 7, 2001.
