Artist Statement RICH SUMMERS ART

Born in Logan, Utah on November 19, 1956, Rich is the son of school teachers. His father was a music teacher and his mother an elementary school teacher, with a minor in art. Rich’s parents moved to Declo, Idaho when he was just 6 months old. He grew up in Idaho, having lived in Ashton, Pocatello and Soda Springs, where he graduated from high school in 1974. His parents loved the outdoors and Rich spent many days growing up accompanying them on fishing, hunting and camping trips in the Island Park area, Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park.

His grandfather oil painted, and passed that passion on to Rich’s mother, who would paint many of the scenes they would see on their summer vacations. Rich began to develop an appreciation for the beauty of the land and the wildlife they would encounter.

Rich became a broadcaster after high school, working in radio. His career took him to Grand Junction, Colorado, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Salt Lake City, Utah, Phoenix, Arizona and eventually, Boise. While in between radio jobs in 1991, Rich began watching the painters on public television (Bob Ross and Bill Alexander). He mentioned that to his mother, and a few days later, UPS knocked on his door with a beginner’s set of oil paints and brushes. A gift from mom.

After being diagnosed with prostate cancer (2006) and losing his mother to lymphoma in 2008, Rich switched his medium to acrylics. “I know Bob Ross had lymphoma. Jerry Yarnell had lymphoma, and I lost my mother to lymphoma. It was time for me to make a change.” Rich has been cancer free since 2006.

Rich currently works for Townsquare Media in Boise, and is the Brand Manager for the valley’s top rated country station, Wow 104.3 FM. He paints in his spare time, focusing mainly on landscapes and wildlife.
Rich and his wife, Amber currently reside in Eagle, Idaho.
