Artist Statement Kirsten Leach is an abstract painter and a modern dancer. She works with a variety of mediums including oil, charcoal, ink and papier-mâché. She is currently examining forms of silence in the aesthetic practices of dance, visual art and poetry--in particular how the concept of silence changes when it is specifically considered a feminist aesthetic. Kirsten's investigations honor forms of silence that have so often been pigeonholed as inaudible or inarticulate; in all of her practices, she privileges an organic and messy performance of the body (quiet or not), where how one feels inside their own anatomical frame is given as much value as how one looks in it. Kirsten's process is decidedly improvisational-- what results when we create from a place of active potentiality?
