Artist Statement Balance and connection define Cheryl Thompson’s life and art. With those two elements, the passionate creativity inside her is free to flow. Cheryl’s love of art surfaced in the sun-drenched San Diego beach community where she grew up. Yet as an adult, her career followed a hard-driving corporate track. By the 1990s, her longing for a simpler, more fulfilling life led her to leave that world behind — to develop and run a family winery in California’s Napa Valley. Surrounded by natural beauty, living life at a slower pace, Cheryl began to reconnect with her creativity. Although she designed and manufactured ceramic tableware items under her own brand, she now licenses her art. After many years, the call of the brush on canvas was not to be ignored and Cheryl has put together a portfolio of color, movement and style all her own.

For me, the creative process is simply intuitive. It always starts with a vague idea — shapes, colors, emotions, which have been inspired by everyday life. Art is an expression of emotion for me. I like texture, movement and color. Often a piece starts with just a small sketch of an idea and develops as I submerge myself into the work. Color is a great communicator and I always have difficulty choosing what colors to best tell my story...there are so many. If I can stand back and look at the work after it is finished and feel it, I have accomplished what I set out to do. Listen and you will hear me talking.
