Artist Statement “Apparently unrelated things become interesting when we start fitting them together”, says John Kouwenhoven, the mathematician.
I am a Pretoria based, full time artist. I participated and organized several exhibitions such as “Another after over again” at Mojamodern Art Gallery. My artist books and oil paintings are a synthesis of concepts and images that seems unconnected. I exist on the foggy jagged edge of sleep, the gray area between sleeping and waking, between living and dying. Here, I am more aware of the illusive cotton candy reality and the pattern that is obscured behind it. I follow chance, which slowly reveals the pattern, and I collect words, images, ideas and rituals along the way.
This collection of sights and thoughts are combined in collages, and create personal metaphors and narratives. I then fuse the various pages in my personal books.
These books serve an integral part in the creation of my digital prints and oil paintings.
I believe that all experiences and situations contribute to my work, and that chance creates the most beautiful ideas and pictures.
