Artist Statement Amber Edgar was born and raised on the prairies of Alberta, Canada. As a young child, on drives to the city, she would make a game out of closing one eye and framing the passing landscape in the passenger window. Her first “camera,” Amber likes to joke, had no film.

Amber’s early education in color and composition came from her mother, a professional interior designer and fine artist, but it was during a high school art class that those roots took hold. On a class assignment for photographic composition, Amber discovered that the adventure of exploring the forest was much more fun with a camera. She failed the assignment, but never came out of the woods.

During two years of music and religious studies in college, Amber developed her skills in a practical and imaginative way: photographing her fellow students for their senior recital posters. The venture was so enjoyable and rewarding that she dove into an extracurricular study of photography, learning largely through local workshops and online study. After college, she spent two years working and training with a professional photographer in digital retouching, all while independently in demand as a freelance photographer by local artists and musicians.

Since 2008 Amber has resided in Hamilton, Ontario, pursuing both her music and photography careers. She has had her work featured on many albums by independent musicians, often in the multiple roles of photographer, graphic designer, and contributing musician. On travels throughout Canada, the United States, and Thailand, she is still playing the familiar game, closing one eye and catching those still frames from a world in motion.
