Artist Statement Background of Artist: Michael Billups (1948-2020)

Michael Billups was born in Washington, D.C., in 1948. Michael attended McKinley Tech in Washington, D.C., where he majored in fine art under renowned artist Sam Gilliam. His Commissions include Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Rockville, Maryland Chapter; the Dance Institute of Washington, Washington, D.C., and H&G Studios, Inc., West Palm Beach, Florida. Michael's most recent commission is to paint campus scene's of historically black colleges and universities around the country. Michael is a publised artist appearing in "Collecting Limited Edition Prints, Contemporary, Aftrican American Printmakers" by Dennis L. Forbes" pg. 30. He has exhibited in one-person shows and group shows in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Michael Billups lived in Washington, D.C. in his childhood home until his death in 2020.
