Description Lightning TeethSeattle, WAThis image is part of a collection of work centered around the theme of utilizing Photoshop to change one photograph into a larger image, using copies of itself. The technique mirrors 4 copies over an implied 'XY-axis', generating an effect similar to a kaleidoscope, but possessing a more simple geometric symmetry. This photograph was taken around 3am during a lightning storm in August of 2008. I took about 100 long exposures from my rooftop of different sections of the night sky. They ranged from 20 seconds up to about 2 minutes and most captured only darkness. I kept erasing the "duds" and after about an hour of shooting the storm had passed. I only got 5 lucky shots containing lightning, but those few images exhilarated me when I saw them zoomed in on the computer screen. The black rectangle in the middle is from my neighbor's chimney. At first, it really bothered me from an aesthetical perspective, but then I realized it was an invitation to showcase another image. The dark bricks turned out to be a great framing device. After trying out many different photos from my collection, I finally decided on one taken from an exhibit of skulls in San Francisco. A little bit of color manipulation to the menacing teeth made the two images match up nicely.
David Werk, Seattle Member Since February 2010 Artist Statement I was born in Atlanta, Georgia on April 28, 1977. After 18 years of growing up in the humid southeast of the United States with only the family point/shoot camera to work with, I ventured off to college in California. After several classes and the purchase of my first SLR camera, painting and photography quickly developed into my main interests. I graduated with a BFA from USC in 1999. Since then I have been living and creating art in San Francisco and Seattle. I currently live in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, WA.
