Description Painting of the rocks and cliffs in Dana Point's tide pools. Is it the large rock cliff that stands watch over the tide pools, or is it the seagull perched there so attentively? This painting was part of a solo exhibit in Dana Point City Hall through the summer of 2016. The Artist and four of her seascapes were also spotlighted in the Dana Point Park & Recreation summer brochure with one of the paintings adorning the cover.

Artist Statement Ellen Schauer is an accomplished award-winning artist. Having lived near the ocean throughout her life, she seeks to describe in her seascapes, the dramatic impact the ocean has had on her, and on her view of life. "The sea has a powerful influence,” says Schauer, “sometimes subtle and soothing, sometimes raging wild upon the jagged rocks, yet it is always beautiful and mesmerizing. I have spent countless hours contemplating the ups and downs of life with my toes in the warm sand and the cool waters along the shore. I have also waded out against strong tides and fought churning waves, tasting the salty grit of the sea, yet I embrace it’s awesome beauty.

Schauer's enhanced realism process is often tedious and analytical, set with boundaries and precise rules, her background in technology persuades that perspective. Yet much of what she puts into her art comes from her heart, as an expressed desire to transport the viewer into a world she loves to see through rose-colored glasses. "Magical illusion is hidden within the depth and dimension of rich textures and vivid color" Schauer says. "If you find a way to let the illusion shine through to the surface, you can share the magic!” That is what she hopes to bring to those who view her art…

Schauer has no professional training in art. As with her days in technology, she learned most of what she knows without the benefit of advanced education. She researched and studied on her own, discovering her process and techniques by simply doing. "And now it isn't only about studying art," Schauer says, "I’m delving into the scientific explanations of ocean tides and currents for my seascapes.

Sometimes the details are important in order to touch the viewer as deeply as life’s experiences touch us all!
