Description In the seventh painting of the 'Lovers' series, the male has totally disappeared! or, better put, he has become one with the background of bloody shadows. The line extensions, that used to bond these lovers, have overtaken the scene: wounds of black dripping red blood everywhere...In their midst, a light blue, reminiscent of water: more shadows.
KATERINA STAMATELOS, New York City Member Since October 2016 Artist Statement I consider myself as a self-taught artist. I create art in large as well as in small formats. After years of experiments, I decided that my preferred medium is gouache on paper! Very little is known about the unique properties of gouache: believe me, it's an exciting medium! My fascination with it started as I used to marvel over Medieval manuscript paintings! I now use a "mixed media" that consists of gouache and ink. Ink gives me the opportunity to create amazing details; gouache gives me the brilliance in colors and the fluidity of using it in several ways.
My influences are: German expressionism and the Greek Orthodox ikons. I owe the persistent use of gold to the latter one. My preferred "theme" is portrait: not of famous people, but the portraying of transformative force on an everyday face. You will find more detailed info as you visit ...
