Description Hand colored photo from 1929Original title: Class at work in the machine shop, Harrison Technical High SchoolPhotographer: Keystone View CompanyLocation: 2850 West 24th Boulevard, Chicago IllinoisThis is Carter Harrison Technical High School, it opened in 1912 after the former Mayor of Chicago, Carter Harrison. They were a 4-year high school, located in South Lawndale neighborhood. It was owned and operated by the Chicago Public Schools district. For around 50 years it served as a vocational school. They taught loom weaving, trained to be machinists, there was a foundry class, wood working and a great number of others. By the 1960's it became a high school for 9th graders, and eventually by 1983, the school closed. Its still a school though. This class is the lathe room, where they are all making something, I believe this class is even larger with other kinds of tools. Learning how to be a machinist was probably one of the most important jobs you can get as they were able to make new tools and build new parts. Every company had a lathe of some kind.
