Description Colorized photo from 1895Original title: Machine division in Tuskegee InstitutionPhotographer: UnknownLocation: Tuskegee, ALIn 1881, a former slave by the names of Lewis Adams, and George W. Campbell, a former slave owner, joined together and founded this school. It was the largest historically black university, set up as a private school. Adams, could not read or write, but he has a strong background in the trades, mostly in tin smithing, harness making, and shoe making. This was one of the first trade schools around, and they taught everything here. Carpentry, machinists, electricity, chemistry, taking care of the farm, etc. Everything you need to know if you wanted to get into the trades.
