Artist Statement Statement

My current focus has to do with the edge of things, the point at which different worlds intersect, especially the material and the spiritual. I first search for a subject that conveys the possibility of inherent multiple realities and take a photographic image. But the original photograph is just the beginning. For me, digital manipulation, by enhancing underlying form is an ideal method for exploring the nexus between observation and imagination.

I concentrate on landscapes, mostly architectural. Closer inspection reveals conversations between nonverbal entities. In religious buildings, I see various expressions of man’s attempt to connect with the spiritual. A cross, for example, can be seen as a hopeful channel of communication.

I am not so much interested in retaining photographic precision in large blowups, as I am in revealing the patterns and textures which lie beneath points of reality. The canvas further extends this tension between knowing and feeling by lending a solidarity to what otherwise would remain below the level of awareness.
