Description I have always loved top hats and when I found a 'collapsible opera style top hat' in an antique shop I had to have it. It isn't in great shape, but the frayed edges and rips gives it character and inspires me in my artWhy, you ask a drawing of an animal wearing a top hat? Why not? During the Victorian era the top hat was associated with Victorian stuffiness and formality. Today, in pop culture the top hat is seen as more comical. My animal art is determined by whim rather than reason. As an artist, what fun to create the unexpected! The original drawing was hand-drawn using black permanent marker and colored in using a blending technique with prismacolor colored pencils.
Tawn Crosby Shivers, Delaware Member Since May 2018 Artist Statement Coming from a family of artists, I was lucky enough to receive the art gene. Beginning in early childhood I won art awards, artistically stood out amongst my school mates and was even voted most artistically talented in my senior class. When I was 11, my mother signed the two of us up for an adult education art class and from that point on there was no turning back. I graduated from Salisbury State University in Maryland as an art major and education minor. As of June 2016 I retired after teaching middle school art in a public school for 30 years. During my teaching career I was also voted "Teacher of the Year" by students and faculty, something I am very proud of! Upon retirement I couldn't wait to get back into my own personal art and begin selling again. When you are teaching art in a school setting your creativity is all used up by the time you arrive back home at the end of the day. As a result, I did not produce very many pieces of art during my teaching career. Today, my goal as an artist is to do what I personally like and what is fun for me. If the public likes it then that is just icing on the cake! That leads me to my current art work featuring an old vintage top hat, animals, pen and ink, with a touch of "steam punk." I will end this by saying that I truly feel whole again producing art and following my passion to create.
