Melanie Greene, Brooklyn, New York
Member Since October 2009
Artist Statement Melanie has had a camera in her hands since the age of eight when she received her first Kodak Instamatic. A native of Philadelphia, Melanie began as a liberal arts major at Penn State and expected to start down a corporate path. She quickly realized that the satisfaction photography brought to her life was something she could not live without. Melanie began to focus her education on photography, first at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC, then at Arcadia University outside of Philadelphia and finally, at the University of the Arts. In 2003, she graduated with a Masters of Arts in Teaching the Visual Arts.

Melanie has taught art and technology for The School District of Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, The New York City Department of Education, Boys and Girls Harbor, Inc., New York City’s 92nd Street Y, and the Glen Cove School District. In addition, Melanie has been freelancing as a fine artist since 2003. In 2008, she established Melanie Greene Productions to execute her approach to Portrait Photography and Graphic Design.

Influencing her photographic style are artists Mary Ellen Mark, for her remarkable and emotion-invoking photojournalistic style and Sally Mann for her detailed family portraits. Children, therefore, are the most logical subject matter for Melanie, first, because they lack inhibitions and are less likely to shy away from the camera; and second, because of the pure pleasure they provide.

Melanie lives in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.
