Description This painting, entitled 'Monk, Monk, Monkey' appeared on the cover of the Journal of Consciousness Studies in England. They contacted me and asked if they could use it for their next edition. It depicts 2 monks in Nikko, Japan, one of whom is offering an apple to a monkey. I've been to Nikko and there are beautiful shrines and temples everywhere...and hundreds of monkeys. It is a beautiful place.
James Lane, Sacramento, Ca. Member Since September 2010 Artist Statement I am fascinated with the world, languages, and the intersection between place and time. I use classical techniques and symbolism, sometimes using dry humor, to express emotions and tell visual stories. The biggest influences on my painting are the places I’ve seen and the people I’ve met around the world. Artistic influences include Gauguin, Edward Hopper, and Hokusai; writers and poets like Paul Bowles, Basho and Pablo Neruda, and movie directors Fellini and Kurosawa. I paint in oils primarily. I often paint upside down to block out conscious interference and remain in a state of creative flow for as long as possible.
