Mel Blossom, Merida Mexico
Member Since September 2012
Artist Statement Originally from Milwaukee, WI, the multi talented, Mel Blossom has been doing art and performing since she was a child. Mel was formally trained in art at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design majoring in painting and sculpture with a minor in graphic design.

In 2003 she founded a nonprofit which took at-risk youth skateboarding once a week which closed in 2006. Not knowing where to go next with her life, Mel began teaching herself how to knit and internet gambling. One night she won enough money to go on a cruise. On that cruise Merida caught Mel’s eye while driving by it on a tour to Chichen Itza and she couldn’t stop dreaming about living in Mexico ever since. The cruise ship comedian also caught Mel’s attention and by the time the trip was over Mel was returning home to pursue stand up comedy with the hopes of working on cruise ships one day and getting to spend most of her time in Mexico.

In 2010 Mel had created a comedy act which included her dog, Blossom. They had been working in comedy for three years and had started their web page Talented Bitches but never lost site of their goal of wanting to live in Mexico. Mel eventually found a way to be able to arrange a two month visit to Merida and on that trip she knew she had found her new home. In May of 2010 Blossom and Mel moved to Merida permanently, instantly becoming the first resident professional English-speaking comedians in the entire Mayan Riviera. In her years performing in the Yucatan Mel has gained the reputation as the most intentionally funny gringa in the Yucatan.

In the summer of 2011 Blossom passed away which put Mel’s comedy work on hold. Without Blossom she would need to rework the act and while she pondered her new stage strategy she began painting full time. She painted what was on her mind, her dog Blossom and her new dogs, which eventually led to her being getting hired to do pet portraits. She spent the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 focusing more on her visual art but proved she could still handle the comedy stage without Blossom in April of 2012 when she was included in a comedy festival in Akumal with professional comics from the US.

Mel now spends her days painting, performing comedy, shooting videos for Talented Bitches.com and interviewing other talented bitches for her online radio show while she enjoys living her dream of calling Mexico home!
